Why come to UQ?

UQ is a top tier, research intensive University that is consistently ranked inside the top three Australian Universities by many criteria. UQ has been the highest ranked Australian university according to the prestigious Nature Index for the last two years running and in 2016 secured a greater share of Australian Research Council grants ($24.5 million) than any other university nationally. Internationally, UQ is ranked alongside some of the world’s top universities, as measured by several key independent rankings, including the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (45), the US News Best Global Universities Rankings (52), QS World University Rankings (51), Academic Ranking of World Universities (55), and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (60).

UQ boasts a vibrant structural biology community that leverages substantial core infrastructure facilities in X-ray crystallography, NMR and cryo-EM. UQ’s electron microscopy infrastructure, which includes 17 electron microscopes and supporting instrumentation, is housed and managed centrally by the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM). CMM was a founding member of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility and was established as Australia’s national cryo-EM facility through the federal government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) in 2003. Current facilities include an FEI F30 microscope equipped with a Gatan K2 direct detection device, a cryo-equipped Tecnai T12, several smaller screening microscopes and ancillary equipment for single particle cryo-EM, as well as a FEI Scios DualBeam FIBSEM and a Gatan 3View SBFSEM system. We also have access to several Titan Krios instruments for automated data collection and a near-term strategy for upgrading UQ’s current cryo-EM facilities is also in place.

Postdoctoral scientists in Australia enjoy internationally-competitive salaries with attractive employment benefits. Australia also offers an appealing lifestyle with its major cities routinely ranking at or near the top of various world standard of living indices. Queensland is Australia’s premier tourist state attracting international visitors year-round and  featuring a diverse range of natural beauty from arid desert plains to savannah grasslands and tropical rainforests. Of Australia’s 12 natural world heritage listed sites, 5 are in Queensland including the world famous Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane – the state capital of Queensland – is Australia’s third largest city with a metropolitan population of 2.3 million and enjoys a warm, sub-tropical climate with more than 300 days of sunshine per year on average, conducive to a year-round outdoor lifestyle. A safe, clean environment with modern, first-class public facilities and infrastructure add to its appeal. Over 3 million people live in the greater South East Queensland area which includes the beautiful beaches of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast to the North, and the Gold Coast to the South.
